How would you describe your firm’s culture in 3 words?
Entrepreneurial. Independent. Passionate.
What is one question you think candidates should be prepared to answer in an interview?
Why do you have an interest in Farris?
Does your firm offer a rotation? If so, what does it look like for summer students and articling students?
We don’t believe in strict rotations or micro-managing workflow. An important part of being a student is exploring different practice areas until you find an area you are truly passionate about and a group of people you love working with. Our self-directed approach gives students the freedom to pursue their interests and to guide their own course. We have over 50 practice areas and industries to explore.
What is one piece of advice you would give a lawyer early in their career?
Be resilient. Transitioning from school to the firm can feel overwhelming. Not only are you working to develop your legal skills, you’re also trying to figure out the dynamics of working in a firm: tight deadlines, real clients, high stakes, and the basics like how to use the photocopier. Be prepared to feel lost. Be prepared to make mistakes.
It’s how you respond to those feelings that counts. Learn to be comfortable not knowing something, but knowing that if you work hard you can figure it out. Use your mistakes as an opportunity to develop your skills. It’s in that area of uncertainty where the challenge lies, and where you will grow and develop as a lawyer.
