What ARe your firm’s core practice areas?

Norton Rose Fulbright Canada has 4 national practice groups: (1) Business; (2) Employment & Labour; (3) Intellectual Property; and (4) Litigation.

How would you describe your firm’s culture in 3 words?

Quality, Unity, Integrity (and we like to have fun!)

What is one question you think candidates should be prepared to answer in an interview?

Why do you want to work at our firm in particular?

Does your firm offer a rotation? If so, what does it look like for summer students and articling students?

Yes. Our summer students rotate (physically move offices) between our two largest groups- Business and Litigation (1.5 months in each). Our articling students have 3 rotations of 3 months each: (1) Business; (2) Litigation; and (3) Unassigned where they can curate their own experience by choosing which practice area on which to focus (e.g. real estate law within our business group.) Note that our rotation system is flexible. Although students are to service the group in which they are located first, they will still have sufficient time to pursue any other areas that may interest them.

What is one piece of advice you would give a law student about choosing a practice area?

Don’t worry about it! Often what you think you are interested in is based on a professor in law school and your interests may shift based on the culture or “vibe” of the group at the particular firm at which you end up working. You should be able to express an interest in an area of law based on what you have done so far in law school, but beyond this law students should not feel pressured to choose an area. We don’t ask students to express a final preference until 6 months into their articling experience- this is one of the benefits of being at a large firm. Students can try out a number of practice areas to see what suits them the best.
